Commitment

1

The size of the bonito

In spring, young 2-3kg first-catch bonito; in autumn, richly fatty 4-5kg returning bonito, carefully selected by season.

2

Raw bonito from Kochi

Most Kochi bonito is pole-and-line caught, leaving it beautiful and undamaged. We ship our select bonito direct from the port.

3

Straw from Shiga

We use straw hand-cut ourselves from vast contracted fields in Shiga. Dried straw burns hot with the finest smoky aroma.

4

The grilling

Over straw flames reaching 1000 degrees, we sear a crust about 5mm into the flesh, then finish with residual heat to lock in flavor.

5

The thickness of the cut

Cut over 1cm thick so the straw aroma fills your mouth, brimming with bonito flavor and a springy texture.

6

Our chosen salt

A fully sun-dried salt handmade by artisans from Kochi seawater. We select larger crystals for a mellow mineral taste.

Service

01

Robata & Warayaki

Bonito from Kochi and Omi beef from Shiga, grilled over straw right before you. Seasonal fish and vegetables draw out their fullest flavor over charcoal.

02

Sake & Local Brews

A generous selection of sake chosen from across Japan, including local Shiga brews — from dry to sweet. Our staff suggest the one glass that suits your dish, so you can enjoy sake tasting in Yasu.

03

Seafood & Sashimi

Fresh fish shipped straight from the port, finished into sashimi by skilled hands. Enjoy the seafood of Yasu in seasonal plates such as our five-kind sashimi platter.

04

Omi Beef & Omi Chicken

Shiga's specialty Omi beef, straw-grilled or miso-marinated, and overnight-dried Omi chicken. Enjoy Shiga's premium ingredients dynamically over charcoal in Yasu.

05

Private Rooms & Banquets

Relaxing private rooms, banquet courses with free-flow drinks, and full-venue bookings on request. Steps from Yasu Station — ideal for company parties and gatherings.

How to enjoy Robata

Robata Story

01

A 45 seat room puts you near the fire

Thirteen counter seats, twelve table seats, eight in the private room and twelve on the terrace: 45 in all. In a room this size, the flames and the crackle of the straw reach every seat.

02

Nothing added, just the ingredient

The finished surface carries the smoke of burning straw. Leave the first slice unseasoned and taste the natural sweetness underneath.

03

In winter, cold yellowtail with salt and citrus

Later in the plate, shift with condiments, rock salt and citrus. Winter brings kanburi yellowtail, whose fat loosens and lightens against salt and citrus.

04

A cigarette and a cup, out to the terrace

Every seat, including the twelve on the terrace, allows smoking. Our staff suggest Shiga sake, dry through sweet, to match your sashimi or straw-grilled dish.

Producers

Tosa-Saga Port, KochiIkkatsu no Daiki

Saga is where the Kuroshio current first meets Japan, a town thriving on pole-and-line bonito fishing and one of Kochi's foremost fishing towns.

Tano, KochiTanoya Seihachi

A genuine sun-dried salt made using only the sun's heat, with painstaking care. Entirely handmade, it grows into crystals that melt in the mouth, the very finest sun-dried salt.

The Pitfalls of Choosing a Private Room: Have You Found the Perfect One for Your Occasion?

When many customers hear private room, they might first imagine large-scale Yasu banquets or business entertainment. Of course, we have ideal private rooms for such purposes, but their charm doesn't stop there.

However, we sometimes hear about small gaps between customer expectations and their actual experience, such as I booked a private room, but it was smaller than I thought, I was bothered by the voices from the next room, or It felt a bit too formal for a family gathering. This often happens when a room is chosen without fully understanding its type and characteristics.

We strongly wish to provide the best private room experience for our customers. To ensure you spend your time at our Yasu Izakaya in the best possible space, the key points for choosing a room change significantly depending on the purpose and the number of people. In the next chapter, we will specifically introduce the variations of private rooms that Kitano Izakaya prides itself on and how to choose the optimal one for each scene.

At Kitano Izakaya, we offer private rooms with different atmospheres to meet the diverse needs of our customers. Here, we introduce how to use our private rooms for each specific occasion.

For Intimate Conversations: Semi-Private Rooms for Yasu Dates and Small Groups

For celebrating an anniversary, a special time on a Yasu date, or a night of deep conversation with close friends, our semi-private rooms, which offer a sense of privacy without feeling enclosed, are highly recommended.

  • Features: You can relax in a calm atmosphere without worrying about the gazes of other customers. The lighting is slightly dimmed, creating a comfortable space that encourages conversation.

  • Example Scenarios: Wedding anniversaries, birthday celebrations, catching up with old friends, business dinners where you want to enjoy a meal slowly, etc.

  • Recommended Way to Enjoy: Savor our rich lineup of Yasu sake while enjoying an assortment of fresh fish delivered directly from the fishing port. It's the perfect environment for discussing recent happenings or future dreams. Our staff will provide attentive service without disturbing you.

For Family Gatherings: Spacious Sunken-Kotatsu Rooms Perfect for Children

For families with small children, three-generation meals, or relative get-togethers, our spacious sunken-kotatsu (horigotatsu) private rooms are extremely convenient. They are popular because you can stretch out your legs, making even long stays comfortable.

  • Features: The sunken-kotatsu seating is easy for children to sit at, allowing you to enjoy your meal with peace of mind. Some rooms have space to place a stroller next to you, so please feel free to ask when booking. A key benefit is that you don't have to worry too much about being a little noisy.

  • Example Scenarios: Celebrations for school entrance, first meal ceremonies (okuizome), meals after a shrine visit (omiyamairi), meeting the parents, birthday parties, etc.

  • Recommended Way to Enjoy: Easy-to-share dishes like our assorted Yasu robatayaki or the luxurious seared Yasu Omi beef are popular. We also have a children's menu, so the whole family can enjoy a time filled with smiles. We can also provide extra plates and children's chairs upon request.

For Lively Yasu Banquets and Parties: Mid-Sized Rooms that Foster a Sense of Togetherness

For wrap-up parties with work colleagues, get-togethers with groups of friends, or club gatherings where you want to have a lively time, our mid-sized private rooms—which maintain a sense of unity while allowing for private conversations—are perfect for a Yasu banquet.

  • Features: These rooms can accommodate about 10 to 20 people, and the entire room is visible, making it easy for the organizer to manage the event. It's a space where laughter can echo freely without worrying about other customers.

  • Example Scenarios: Welcome parties, farewell parties, year-end parties (bonenkai), New Year parties (shinnenkai), social gatherings, regular meetups with hobby groups, etc.

  • Recommended Way to Enjoy: Using a Yasu Banquet Course with an all-you-can-drink option reduces the burden on the organizer. With smoking rules becoming stricter in recent years, we strive to create an environment where both smokers and non-smokers can comfortably spend time in the same space.

  • Features: We can guide you to smoking-permitted private rooms or rooms adjacent to a smoking booth, depending on your preference. This allows smokers to enjoy a cigarette without leaving their seat or interrupting conversations with their companions.

  • Example Scenarios: For Yasu banquets or parties where there are smokers in the group, or for when you want to relax and have a smoke in private.

  • Recommended Way to Enjoy: Regardless of smoking preference, you can enjoy our exquisite Yasu seafood and Yasu robatayaki dishes, as well as a wide variety of Yasu sake in all our private rooms.
