Commitment

1

The size of the bonito

In spring, young 2-3kg first-catch bonito; in autumn, richly fatty 4-5kg returning bonito, carefully selected by season.

2

Raw bonito from Kochi

Most Kochi bonito is pole-and-line caught, leaving it beautiful and undamaged. We ship our select bonito direct from the port.

3

Straw from Shiga

We use straw hand-cut ourselves from vast contracted fields in Shiga. Dried straw burns hot with the finest smoky aroma.

4

The grilling

Over straw flames reaching 1000 degrees, we sear a crust about 5mm into the flesh, then finish with residual heat to lock in flavor.

5

The thickness of the cut

Cut over 1cm thick so the straw aroma fills your mouth, brimming with bonito flavor and a springy texture.

6

Our chosen salt

A fully sun-dried salt handmade by artisans from Kochi seawater. We select larger crystals for a mellow mineral taste.

Service

01

Robata & Warayaki

Bonito from Kochi and Omi beef from Shiga, grilled over straw right before you. Seasonal fish and vegetables draw out their fullest flavor over charcoal.

02

Sake & Local Brews

A generous selection of sake chosen from across Japan, including local Shiga brews — from dry to sweet. Our staff suggest the one glass that suits your dish, so you can enjoy sake tasting in Yasu.

03

Seafood & Sashimi

Fresh fish shipped straight from the port, finished into sashimi by skilled hands. Enjoy the seafood of Yasu in seasonal plates such as our five-kind sashimi platter.

04

Omi Beef & Omi Chicken

Shiga's specialty Omi beef, straw-grilled or miso-marinated, and overnight-dried Omi chicken. Enjoy Shiga's premium ingredients dynamically over charcoal in Yasu.

05

Private Rooms & Banquets

Relaxing private rooms, banquet courses with free-flow drinks, and full-venue bookings on request. Steps from Yasu Station — ideal for company parties and gatherings.

How to enjoy Robata

Robata Story

01

A 45 seat room puts you near the fire

Thirteen counter seats, twelve table seats, eight in the private room and twelve on the terrace: 45 in all. In a room this size, the flames and the crackle of the straw reach every seat.

02

Nothing added, just the ingredient

The finished surface carries the smoke of burning straw. Leave the first slice unseasoned and taste the natural sweetness underneath.

03

In winter, cold yellowtail with salt and citrus

Later in the plate, shift with condiments, rock salt and citrus. Winter brings kanburi yellowtail, whose fat loosens and lightens against salt and citrus.

04

A cigarette and a cup, out to the terrace

Every seat, including the twelve on the terrace, allows smoking. Our staff suggest Shiga sake, dry through sweet, to match your sashimi or straw-grilled dish.

Producers

Savoring Seasonal Bounties with All Five Senses: Special Menus Featuring Yasu's Best

At the core of our cuisine is a dedication to shun, or seasonality. The ingredients nurtured by Japan's four rich seasons deliver unique flavors and nutrients that can only be enjoyed at a specific time of year. As an izakaya in Yasu, we cherish this concept above all to provide the best dining experience to our local community.

Wild Vegetables and Seafood Heralding the Arrival of Spring

In spring, we prepare tempura and dressed dishes featuring wild mountain vegetables known for their distinct bitterness and aroma. Edible wild plants like butterbur sprouts and fatsia sprouts, brimming with life, adorn our tables. The spring seas also bring us fresh, firm, and flavorful seasonal seafood. We serve the best fish of the season, such as cherry sea bream and first-of-the-season bonito, as sashimi or grilled dishes, allowing you to feel the arrival of spring.

Fresh Vegetables and Refreshing Dishes to Welcome Summer's Coolness

During the hot summer, you'll crave light and refreshing dishes to cool down. Our colorful salads made with crisp summer vegetables and chilled dishes with a smooth texture are sure to whet your appetite. We use an abundance of fresh cucumbers, eggplants, and tomatoes grown around Lake Biwa to create visually refreshing plates. You can also enjoy summer seafood delicacies like conger eel (hamo), either blanched or as tempura, for a true taste of the season.

Celebrating the Autumn Harvest with Rich, Bountiful Flavors

The autumn of appetite is a true feast for the senses. Dishes featuring chestnuts, mushrooms, and new-crop rice—the bounties of the earth—decorate our tables. Indulge in the luxuries of autumn with fragrant matsutake mushroom rice, foil-grilled mushrooms packed with umami, and salt-grilled saury at its fatty peak. Fresh vegetables and fruits from Shiga Prefecture are also prepared in ways that maximize their unique sweetness and flavor.

Heartwarming Hot Pot Dishes and Delicacies to Warm the Winter Chill

In the cold winter, a hot pot that warms you from the core is the ultimate treat. We offer a variety of hot pot dishes, including luxurious sukiyaki and shabu-shabu featuring Omi beef from Yasu, Shiga's prized brand of cattle, as well as seafood hot pots brimming with fresh catches from the sea. The harmony of rich broth and seasonal ingredients provides a warmth that makes you forget the harsh cold. Of course, winter delicacies and seasonal fish can also be savored slowly with a glass of sake.

In this way, we offer a diverse menu throughout the year that allows you to experience the changing of the seasons. We promise a luxurious time savoring the seasonal best of Yasu with all five senses in a private space with your loved ones.

Omi Beef and Seafood Direct from the Port: Local Luxuries at Our Yasu Izakaya

For us, located in the fertile land of Yasu, it is our important mission to make the most of local ingredients. In particular, Shiga Prefecture's prized Omi beef and fresh seafood are the two proud pillars of our establishment.

Exquisite Omi Beef from Yasu That Melts in Your Mouth

Omi beef, one of Japan's top three wagyu brands, is characterized by its fine-grained texture and the sweet flavor of its melt-in-your-mouth fat. We offer carefully selected Omi beef prepared in various ways. Enjoy the profound umami of Omi beef through dishes like seared sushi, tataki (lightly seared), steak, and seasonal hot pots.

  • Seared Omi Beef Sushi: Lightly searing the beef enhances its aroma and concentrates its umami. The moment it enters your mouth, a melting texture and sweetness spread.
  • Omi Beef Tataki: The surface is seared to a fragrant finish while the inside remains moist and rare. Enjoy it refreshingly with condiments and ponzu sauce.
  • Omi Beef Steak: Cooked to perfection to allow you to simply savor the original flavor of Omi beef. It pairs excellently with both wine and sake.

We invite you to savor these exceptionally luxurious dishes for your special banquet.

Direct from the Fishing Port! Experience the Ocean's Bounty with Yasu Seafood

Although Shiga Prefecture is landlocked, we source fresh seafood directly from the day's catch through trusted routes. We deliver seasonal fish at peak freshness to your table.

We offer our seafood prepared in the optimal way for each type of fish and season, whether it's a beautiful sashimi platter with translucent flesh, charcoal-grilled to bring out its natural flavor, simmered, or made into tempura. Fatty seasonal fish, in particular, pairs wonderfully with sake and is sure to liven up the conversation.

Our pride as an izakaya in Yasu lies in our thorough commitment to this Omi beef and seafood. Experience the luxury of enjoying the rich bounties of both Shiga's land and the sea while in Yasu. Please enjoy this indulgent experience at your leisure in our private space.
